With the new cooperation agreement, Borealis Data Center will be connected to Snerpa Power´s software platform to automate load scheduling and sell electricity back to the grid in the form of balancing energy. The pilot project will use Snerpa Power´s software platform and various real-time data streams to unleash the flexibility of the data center load and contribute to a more efficient and sustainable power system.

Commenting on the new partnership, Björn Brynjúlfsson, CEO of Borealis DC said:
„It is important for Borealis Data Center to be able to optimize planning of energy use, and at the same time participate in improving the utilization of renewable resources in Iceland. We have high hopes that the cooperation with Snerpa Power will facilitate that. “

Íris Baldursdóttir, CEO of Snerpa Power, added:
“We are incredibly thankful for Borealis DC as an early pilot partner because they share our mission of increasing the efficiency and competitiveness of the power system to speed up the energy transition and reach the climate goals. We are certain that this is just the beginning of a long and fruitful collaboration for both Borealis DC, Snerpa Power and society as a whole.”

Snerpa Power creates intelligent energy solutions that tap into the full potential of the power intensive industry, creating new revenue streams for its industrial customers, increasing their competitiveness and leaving more room on the market for the energy transition. The Snerpa Power software platform is an intelligent link between the balancing market and the power intensive user that unleashes flexibility and activates the user as a participant in balancing the grid.

Today, a total of 140 MW are reserved in power plants around Iceland to ensure that the power system is always in balance and to avoid blackouts. If power intensive users would provide these balancing services, more power and energy would be available for the energy transition and to meet Iceland´s ambitious climate goals. The potential savings from the efficiency improvement is up to 375 kton CO2/year if used for direct electrification of transport. 140 MW is equivalent to the installed power of a medium to large sized hydro power plant and around 5% of the total installed power in the Icelandic power system.
